Post-war Japan’s housing construction During the Second World War, Japanese homes were destroyed in large numbers in the war. After the war, there were 4.2 million homeless families, and about 20 million people in nearly 100 million people were short of housing. The situation was quite serious. Since then, the housing construction has gradually developed. By 1968, it had owned 25.59 million sets of houses, which was slightly more than the 25.32 million households in the country. From the country-wide housing shortage to the situation has basically reversed, and has experienced more than two decades. In the 1970s, the scale of housing construction was even greater. Looking at this process, several features are worth noting. The speed of development is slow and fast. From a total of 13 years from 194 to 68 years, new housing has maintained more than 10 million square meters per year. It began to rise in 1959 and it was increased by about 10 million square meters annually. In 1969, more than 90 million square meters of new residential buildings were built; after the 1970s, it exceeded 100 million square meters annually. In 1946-78, more than 1.9 billion square meters of residential buildings were built. This development process reflects the growth of Japan’s economic strength.
