Over the years there have been many debates over the impact of coronary artery bypass surgery on survival rates, and the debate is sometimes even fierce. Recently, this controversy has been largely subdued by the publication of several articles with similar results. There is almost agreement now that coronary artery bypass may prolong the life of patients in some types of patients. This article reviews the literature on the impact of bypass surgery on survival to confirm that certain types of patients can be surgically treated to prolong life. However, due to the different design of past research work and the different interpretations of clinical data, there have been so many debates.
