常州词派的理论经过了一个开创、修正、完善的过程。常州词派开创者张惠言的词论将汉儒的比兴论引入词坛,带有明显的矫枉过正的色彩。尔后,其词学弟子董士锡、金应等人由于个人生活的坎坷,强调了词学创作自我实现和心理渲泄的功能,在陆机、钟嵘的理论中吸收营养,从另一个方面修正了张氏的比兴理论。周济在词学上受法于董士锡,但又称与张惠言、董士锡“各存岸略”,“或合或否,要其旨归,各有正鹄”。周济折中、完善了张、董词论,提出了“有寄托”与“无寄托”统一的主张,从而奠定了常州词派颇具特色的词学理论。
