University of Alberta chemists have discovered an active catalyst that has the potential to improve the efficiency and environmental impact of agrochemicals and drug production processes. The study was led by Professor Steven Bergens, a chemistry professor at the University of Alberta. Research has been conducted on organic compounds used as starting materials in many industries - amides. Bergens and the team found that combining this new catalyst with hydrogen safely and effectively converts amide compounds into a variety of chemical products needed without the generation of environmentally hazardous waste.
