左宗棠(1812—1885),字季高,清末大臣,洋务派首领。在19世纪60年代,有人提出,仿造轮船,师法洋人,是“以夷变夏”,左宗棠对这一无知的说法进行了批驳。他形象地说:“譬犹使马,人跨骏我骑驴,可乎?”提出:要抵御外侮,就要改变落后状态,以驴易骏,就要整理水师,设厂造船。左宗棠既不盲目排外,也不盲目崇洋,而是采取了“师远人之长,还以治之”的态度。
