魏德迈调查是美国政府为其进退两难的对华政策寻找出路的产物,其目的不仅是为了解决如何援蒋的问题,而且主要是为了解决要不要继续援蒋的问题。尽管这次调查的确也收集了极其丰富的资料,但由于他们在调查中始终戴着“有色眼镜”,这就决定了不可能得出真正合乎实际的结论。事实上,魏德迈的调查没有、也不可能为美国的对华政策找到出路,而只是使它在既要干涉中国内战,又想免于卷入中国内部事务的自相矛盾的漩涡中越陷越深。
Wedemeyer’s investigation is the product of the U.S. government seeking a way out for its dilemma toward China’s policy. Its purpose is not only to solve the problem of how to aid Chiang but also to solve the problem of whether or not to continue to aid Jiang. Although this survey did indeed collect an extremely wealth of information, it was impossible to come to a realistic conclusion as they were always wearing “colored glasses” during the investigation. In fact, Wedemeyer’s investigation did not and could not find a way out for U.S.’s China policy, but only made it deeper and deeper in the paradoxical whirlpool of intervention in China’s civil war and its involvement in China’s internal affairs .
