市西中学源于1870年创办的尤来旬学校,具有深厚的文化传统和教育底蕴。1946年命名为上海市市西中学之后,首任校长赵传家先生提出的“好学力行”校训,教育和熏陶了一代代市西人,在70年办学过程中,通过陈孟昭、孙志文、杨安澜和顾正卿等历任校长及其教师团队的持续奋斗,共同铸就了“海纳百川的历史渊源,兼容并包的教育情怀,好学力行的文化传统,敢为人先的锐意探索,追求卓越的执著信念”的学校特质。
