列昂纳德·欧勒(Leonhard Euler,1707年4月15日至1783年9月18日),著名数学家、力学家、物理学家和天文学家,生于瑞士的巴塞尔,卒于俄国的彼得堡。父亲保罗·欧勒是当地加尔文教的牧师,也是一位数学爱好者。曾在巴塞尔大学上学的保罗,是当时著名数学家雅各布·伯努利的高材生。但可惜他不想从事数学研究工作,同时也希望小欧勒能与自己一样,长大后在乡村教堂里当牧师。幸运的是,保罗有个毛病,高兴的时候,他会抛开天国和上帝,眉飞色舞地讲他对数学的研究心得。牧师绘声绘色、妙趣横生的口才完全把小欧勒迷住了,热爱数学的种子就这样默默地埋在了孩子的心里。

Father Paul Euler is a local Calvinist pastor and a math enthusiast. Paul, a former schoolboy at Basel University, was the top student of the famous mathematician Jacob Bernoulli.
