全区最大藏传佛教寺院五当召,又名广觉寺,位于包头市以北54公里的阴山山脉吉忽伦图山的五当沟,在连绵起伏的大青山深处,规模宏大、气势磅礴,它与西藏的布达拉宫、青海的塔尔寺和甘肃的抗卜楞寺齐名,是中国藏传佛教的四大名寺之一,也是内蒙古自治区最大藏传佛教寺院。五当召占地300多亩,殿堂仓舍2538间,主体建筑由六座大殿、三座活佛府、一座存放本召历代活佛骨灰的苏卜盖陵和新建的包头蒙古民俗展览馆,以及多栋喇嘛宿舍
