Amy Tan published the first novel The Joy Luck Club in 1989 with great success. Due to her Chinese face and the Chinese element in her novels, she is known as an outstanding Chinese American writer. However, Amy Tan called her a “American writer who is free to enjoy whatever she wants to write.” This article explores how Amy Tan’s native cultural awareness as “American writer” is reflected in her novels and influences the description of Chinese elements from two aspects.
