多焊丝宽程堆焊可在大面积自动焊机一次行程中堆焊上所需厚度的金属层,而堆焊宽度可等于零件的宽度。这样,就能提高堆焊工作的效率,并改进堆焊的质量。但是,由于在堆焊过程中有很大的热功率,对薄壁零件来说,采用这种方法是不合适的。这是因为会出现烧穿零件的危险。货车转向架摩擦减震器斜楔的堆焊修复,就是此类情况的一个典型例子。斜楔的壁厚在最大磨损情况下为5~6毫米。用水平电渣焊方法在一次行程中能在长宽尺寸为135×180毫米的表面上使板材厚从6毫米堆焊到12毫米。下图为多焊丝水平电渣堆焊方法的示意图。
