对于图形显示领域的厂商而言,近2年来的发展速度完全可以用“一日千里”来形容。从1998年的3dfx VoodooⅠ、nVidia Riva 128、Intel 740、Matrox MGA G200、S3Savage 3D、3dfx Voodoo Banshee、nVidia Riva TNT,到 1999年的ATI Rage 128、3dfx Voodoo 3、S3 Savage 4、nVidia Riva TNT2、Matrox MGA G400以及nVidiaGeForce 256、S3 Savaa 2000,短短2年之内显示芯片已经跨越了从第2代到第5代整整3个台阶。计算机发展的摩尔定律称每18个月CPU性能将提升1倍,而现在,这一定律实际上已被显示芯片的发展远远抛在了身后!当大家都围绕显示卡的性能指标“大动干戈”之际,如何从显示芯片本身深挖潜力以及怎样在显示卡的更高层次——体系结构上做文章,己经成为各大厂商面前的2只“拦路虎”。

Moore’s Law of Computer Development says CPU performance will double every 18 months, and now this law has actually been shown to be far behind the development of the chip! As everyone around the graphics card performance indicators “go-dry”, how to tap the potential of the display chip itself and how to make a fuss about the higher level graphics card - architecture, has become the major manufacturers in front of 2 “Stumbling block”.
