McDonnell Douglas recently started a series of flight tests with an AV-8B aircraft equipped with “rattlesnake” missiles on the wing tips. The purpose of the test is to demonstrate some of the advanced manufacturing tools, manufacturing techniques and VSTOL flight technology the company is researching. McDonnell Douglas established a VSTOL research and development center last year with a long-term commitment to the JAST / ASTOVL program in the United States. Short-term efforts focused on AV -8B for various improvements in the feasibility study. Earlier this year, the center launched a pilot project funded by the company, which is divided into eight pilot projects. The AV-8B flight test of the wingtip “Rattler” missile, completed at the end of last year, is part of the pilot project. The purpose of the entire program is to demonstrate the company’s research and development of a variety of advanced manufacturing, manufacturing technology and VS-TOL new technology.
