1952年,第十五届奥运会在芬兰首都赫尔辛基举行,吴传玉首次出现在奥运赛场上。100米仰泳预赛,他以1分12秒3的成绩为新中国运动员在奥运会上留下第一个比赛记录。从此他被称为“新中国飞鱼”。模仿电影明星1928年8月,吴传玉出生于印度尼西亚东爪哇的一个华侨家庭。吴家祖籍福建,从吴传玉爷爷那辈起就漂洋过海,去印尼谋生,到吴传玉这一代,已是第三代的印尼侨民,他的父亲已不会说汉语。吴传玉的父亲在这个小城里经营着一个很小的书店,只够糊口。因家境贫寒,吴传玉也没有学过中文,只会印尼文和荷兰文。
