由我国著名马克思主义社会科学家陈翰笙同志主编的《华工出国史料汇编》(下简称《汇编》)已于1985年由中华书局全部出版。这部十卷集的巨著为我国开展华工和华侨史的研究工作创造了极为有利的条件,因而受到了读者的热烈欢迎。陈翰老为什么在晚年要离开他卓有建树的领域,而去编纂一部华工出国史料?为了回答这个问题,让我们首先做一历史回顾。(一)陈翰笙与华侨史研究20年代中期,陈翰笙同志曾在第三国际研究农民问题。1928年他离莫斯科回国,经蔡元培推荐出任中央研究院社会学研究所副所长。当时国内正围绕中国社会性质这一重大问题开展着激烈的论战。陈翰笙同志遂利用他在学术界的职位,组织了大规模的农村经济调查,并
The Compendium of Overseas Chinese Workers Abroad (“the Compendium”) compiled by Comrade Chen Hansheng, a well-known Marxist social scientist in our country, was published by Zhonghua Book Company in 1985. This ten-volume masterpiece has created extremely favorable conditions for China’s work on the study of the history of Chinese laborers and overseas Chinese and thus received a warm welcome from readers. Why did Chen Hanlao leave his valuable field in his later years and go to compile a Chinese laborer’s overseas materials? To answer this question, let us first make a historical review. (A) Chen Hansheng and Overseas Chinese History Study In the mid-1920s, Comrade Chen Hansheng studied the peasant issue in the Third International. He returned from Moscow in 1928 and was recommended by Cai Yuanpei as deputy director of the Institute of Sociology at the Academia Sinica. At that time, the Mainland was fiercely debating the major issue concerning the nature of China’s society. Comrade Chen Hansheng used his position in academia to organize a large-scale rural economy survey.
