The 16th and 17th centuries were the "golden age" of Spain. In 1584, Felipe II built the Escorial Monastery and attracted architects and painters throughout Europe. In 1615, Cervantes completed the Classicmasterpiece and Don Quixote was widely circulated; in 1656, the great painter Velázquez created the monumental Las Meninas, and the most prolific playwright, Lope de Vega, also shocked the world with his frequent masterpieces. The place where the eternal charm of the art of the Golden Age is concentrated must be the Barrio de Las Letras in Madrid, where Madrid's first luxury hotel in history—Gran HotelInglés Madrid, was born on December 17, 1886.
Where Literary Giants Left Names
When visiting Madrid, the Barrio de Las Letras is undoubtedly the most attractive area of this old city, located in the center of the city, between the two major scenic spots of Sol Gran Via and Art Avenue. The atmosphere of the district is made up of the trace of the lives and works of many authors in the Golden Age: Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Tirso de Molina, Góngora... poems and speeches, and the golden writings are engraved on the stone. The free style of the gradually gathers the keywords with similar minds... In the area of Echegaray - named after Spain's first Nobel Laureate and dramatist, Echegaray is home to the first luxury hotel in Madrid's history: the Gran Hotel Inglés. Echegaray himself was also a guest at the hotel then. As Madrid's first hotel, the birth of Gran Hotel Inglés can be traced back to its founder, Mr. Agustin Ibarra, the owner of the Inglés Cafe, in 1886. During the time when he passed through the literati district, and fell for the first sight of the unfinished buildings and the expectations arising from him: to create a space that can be used for feasting, sleeping, private, and public space; and its structure fulfills all the philosophy of the owner: With the pride of the party owner, the guests, not only the "staying guests", are presented with the most well-prepared and top-class hospitality. The hotel debuted at the end of 1886. It was reported on the "Spanish Communication", the most important newspaper at the time, with "Equipped bathroom, elevator, and heating on each floor." Immediately after the Madrid parliament, it became the second electrified building in Madrid. At that time, it was groundbreaking.
After Gran Hotel Inglés opened to business, she quickly gained fame and became one of the best hotels in Spain and even all of Europe. Perfectly suited to its regional characteristics, is its most proud guest list, it is not a head of state or a business executive, but rather those left a mark on the Spanish literature and entertainment community: the poet and playwright Gaspar Nu?ez De Arce, the famous matador, Rafael Gomez Ortega and his wife, Pastora Imperio, tango singer Carlos Gardel, painter group from Lusi?ol and Matisse, singer Raquel Meller... of course, the charm of Gran Hotel Inglés is not bound by the border. José Rizal, a martyr of the Philippine independence movement, once spoke at the dinner and spoke about the revolutionary ideals. After he sacrificed, they also held his hundredth birthday here; the room where the famous American writer Virginia Woolf once stayed has continued to accept appointed reservation. Who can assert the famous statement of "a room of one's own," is written without any inspiration from the Gran Hotel Inglés?
A Grand Re-opening
The legendary Gran Hotel Inglés was re-opened in March 2018 after many years of operation. The maximum number of rooms that had once reached 132 at the time was now reduced to 48 rooms (sets),asking for more sincerity and luck to stay here. As a member of the famous Leading Hotels of the world, Gran Hotel Inglés is not emboldened by the scale, but by its uniqueness of its history and geography and the confidence in each corner of the space.
The hotel invited the famous Rockwell NY designer office, who refurbished with The New York Edition in New York, to renovate the hotel. The first flourishing period in the hotel and the emerging decorative art style in the early 20th century were the keynotes. Both the beauty and the function were reminiscent of the past memory. The use of gentle and restrained colors allows for simple composition of geometrical images, organic interactions, from day to night, both within and outside of the city, blending with the natural light and the surroundings. The shape of the bathtub stands, the zenith of the suite, and even the details of the mirror configuration and other details in the gym are hidden in the classical Spanish elements. It feels like a gentle breeze touches the guitar string in the ear of the viewer. As the office's first complete historic hotel project in Spain, the fusion of classical and modern fun has been extremely successful.
The hotel's most luxurious top-floor Royal Suite sits in a 125-square-meter private space in the heart of Madrid's old quarter. The suite has 2 separate bedrooms, an oversized living area, a separate dining room and complimentary champagne for guests. In order to maintain the old and elegant style in detail, there is even an antique century-old cocktail cart in the room, and the butler can always ask for a classic bartending service. In the 1920s, European nobles stopped here for luxury and exquisite life.
The Meller Suite, also on the top floor, is more satisfying for couples' imagination of Madrid's sun and romance, because in this 50 square metre twin suite, hides one of the most exclusive spaces in Madrid's best boutique hotels - a private terrace with a jacuzzi, overlooking the hotel's quiet central courtyard. The iconic blue skies, orange roofs and snow-white walls, where you can enjoy a glass of champagne in the sunset, will be an unforgettable experience. The rooms on the lower floors, superior rooms with separate small balconies, combine the elegance of 19th century Spanish architecture and avant-garde décor, and the individual baths and small balconies in the rooms are romantic and overlook the ancient streets, the legacy of the Golden Age.
The hotel's restaurant, The LOBO 8 restaurant, echoes the old street name of the hotel, 10 Calle del Lobo, and the restaurant is decorated with various styles of "wolf" themed artworks and colorful paintings. The design makes this the most fashionable restaurant in the area. Simply to have breakfast here is a witness to the reputation of Madrid as a gastronomy city and the standards set by the founders centuries ago. In addition, as a luxury hotel in a literary district, the Gran Hotel Inglés even has a library for its residents.
It does not stop at reality, it is not limited by time and space, eternal pursuit of innovation and beauty, and its motivation stems from the love for people. This type of literary art has taken root in the form of a hotel by crossing the categories. Perhaps this is the spiritual core of the Legend of Gran Hotel Inglés.
