甘孜州位于四川省西部,青藏高原东南缘,民间习惯称之为“康巴”地区。“康巴” 一词系藏语音译。在作为族群概念时,其意为“康区人”(过去专指康巴藏族,现在泛指生活在康区的所有人);在作为地域概念时,它则是指“康巴人生活的地区”,即“康区”。这一地区为我国三大藏族地区(卫藏、安多、康)之一。在清末至民国初期,汉文史籍将这一地区称为“川边”或“川滇边”。西康建省后,又有“西康”之称。
