OBJECTIVE In view of the fact that Anlu City in Hubei Province is a relatively intensive area for pig breeding, understanding the status of swine hepatitis E infection in Anlu has an important public health significance for the prevention and control of hepatitis E in Hubei Province and its surrounding areas. Methods A total of 174 swine serum samples were collected from 15 townships (development zones) in Anlu City, Hubei Province from November 2015 to March 2016. Among them, 22 swine farms, 122 serums, 25 salamanders, 52 Serum. 79 samples below 3 months of age and 95 samples above 3 months of age. The hepatitis E virus antibody (HEV-Ab) was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The positive rate of HEV-Ab in 174 pigs was 37.9%. There was no significant difference in the positive rate of HEV-Ab between large-scale farming (38.5%) and free-range pigs (36.5%) (χ2 = 0.061, P = 0.805). The positive size field accounted for 63.6%, positive free-standing accounted for 40.0%, the difference was not statistically significant (χ2 = 2.616, P = 0.106). The positive rates of HEV-Ab in pigs below 3 months and above 3 months were 31.6% and 43.2%, respectively, with no significant difference (χ2 = 2.428, P = 0.119). The positive rate of HEV-Ab in pigs from different towns (development zones) ranged from 0% to 90%, with significant difference (χ2 = 64.779, P = 0.000). Conclusion There are more common cases of HEV infection in the local pig population. There is no significant difference in the scale, field and age of the pigs, and there are differences among different townships (development zones).
