With the increasing knowledge of medical genetics, it is important to provide the frequency and financial burden of genetic diseases based on morbidity and mortality. Recently, several studies in developed countries have shown that genetic diseases are the major cause of hospitalization and death in pediatric and medical institutions. According to the author’s knowledge, only two surveys have been conducted in other countries in Latin America so far. One is Berreiro et al.’s survey of the Children’s Hospital of Ellis Provincial Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He found that 25% of the patients are due to hereditary diseases. Or congenital defects admitted to the hospital; the other is in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, whose birth defects accounted for 10% of pediatric inpatients. In Mexico, Armendares et al.’s study of two pediatric hospitals showed that about 6% of patients died of genetic causes, and 20% of diseases had genetic factors. This article examines all the data on the frequency and economic burden of determining the disease in the pediatric inpatients at the Mexican National Institute of Pediatrics. Materials and Methods The National Institute of Pediatrics is a 350-bed comprehensive pediatric hospital that provides tertiary medical and clinical teaching as well as a research center. Mainly serves children from all over Mexico and Mexico City
