竹材是人们极为熟悉的一种材料,它具有与木材相同或比木材更好的物理力学性能。竹子喜温好湿,生长极快,是一种轮伐期短(一般3~4年)、可更新的自然资源。湖南生产竹材制品历史悠久,人们利用其割裂性能,主要利用竹筒表层层-青蔑,编织竹器,竹材利用率仅30%左右。1979年,湖南省开始研制竹质建材,1980年投入批量生产。当时主要是利用生产竹器中废弃的竹黄蔑编成竹编席,经叠合、施胶、热压工艺制成竹胶合板,产品很快推广到建筑市场,后来扩展应用到机械产品的包装板、家具隔板和农用的打稻机、风车、谷仓等。1983年,由湖南省竹胶合板厂研制捣制混凝土用的竹胶模板。经过多次试验,他们采用竹器加工过程中的废料编成竹帘作骨架材料,与原竹编席复合热压,当年就成功研制出混凝土用竹胶模板。其主要性能为:
