Almost 200 million people in the UK have lead in drinking-water that exceeds European allowable standards and almost 800,000 have lead in drinking-water that exceeds less-stringent WHO standards. But the UK Department of the Environment said drinking water supplies do not cause any chronic lead poisoning problems. The recent report of the American Academy of Science (NAS), Drinking Water and Health, recommends that drinking water safety limits be two times more stringent than those recommended by the EEC (Economic Commission for Europe) and four times more stringent than those recommended by the WHO.
