总统视察的第5舰队将极大提升战争准备程度新年伊始的1月13日,美国总统布什在繁忙的中东访问日程中还是抽空视察了驻扎巴林的美海军第5舰队,而这次行程显然是同最近美伊军舰在霍尔木兹海峡对峙引起的紧张局势密切相关的。第5舰队则是美国部署在海湾地区抗衡伊朗军事威胁的先遣队和主力军,布什总统当然就格外注重这支前沿部署力量的“矛尖”作用,不惜在紧张的国事出访途中亲临第5舰队司令部,听取指挥官的情况汇报,检查舰艇的战备状况,并与官兵们共进早餐,以示关怀。这一切都表明,美军已让第5舰队作好了应对伊朗军队挑衅与“基地”组织在海湾地区新一轮破坏
