《在中国屏风上》是记叙毛姆1920年在中国旅行经历的一部游记。在这部游记中,毛姆以注视者的身份用洒脱俊逸的文笔建构了中国这一他者形象。在建构出的中国形象中,涵盖了中国的人物,自然与人文景观,以及在华洋人。这些人、物各具特点,但是,从他们身上,却能体察到毛姆眼中的中国。毛姆所要追寻的是昔日的璀璨,他将自己的欲望投射进观察对象中,他所建构出的中国亦是他理想中的形象。而他对中国抱有的歧视与偏见也不可避免地渗入其中。
“On the China Screen” is a travelogue about Maugham traveling in China in 1920. In this travelogue, Maugham built the image of China as the gazetteer with his freehand brushwork. Among the constructed Chinese images, it covers Chinese characters, natural and cultural landscapes, as well as foreigners in China. These people and things have their own characteristics. However, from them, they can see China in Maugham’s eyes. What Maugham pursues is the old glory. He cast his own desires into the observers. The Chinese that he constructed is also his ideal image. His discrimination and prejudice against China inevitably infiltrated it.
