Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a critical cellular process in embryonic development and is also the basis for wound repair,tissue regeneration,and cancer metastasis (Zhao et al.,2015).During cancer migration and invasion,EMT involved comprehensive reprogramming processes related to cytoskeletal remodeling,cell differentiation,epigenetic regulation and metabolism (Plikus et al.,2015).In fact,the understanding of EMT in cancer development is still limited.In 2015,EMT was demonstrated not requiring for cancer metastasis but contributing to cancer cell resistance (Fischer et al.,2015;Zheng et al.,2015).However,recent in vivo experiments observed at least seven different tumor subpopulations in skin cancer and breast cancer,which represent different EMT states.This indicates that tumor cells in the early stages of EMT,that is,mixed EMTcell states,rather than cancer cells in a completely interstitial state,cause cancer metastasis (Pastushenko et al.,2018).
