This article examines the impact of the German unification on research and development (R & D) “Prospects ” (ie, the evolution of research and development capabilities in terms of institutions and roles) and of German research and technology policies. Describes the few important determinants involved in the process of adjustment, as well as the foreseeable future trends. In particular, the following issues have been highlighted: - The economic situation in East Germany and its development within a clear view in the coming years; - The prospects for research and development in East and West Germany and the changes that they are undergoing; - The importance of industrial research and development and its most important adjustment issues; - Outlook and unresolved issues.
