This paper addresses Stoicism and its impact upon Western rhetoric during the European Renaissance.My subject is historical,but it puts into high relief some methodological questions about the nature of rhetorical study that is global,multi-cultural,and interdisciplinary.Stoicism as a philosophy began to take shape in Greek society around 200 B.C.E.,and the full flowering of Renaissance rhetoric occurs around1600 C.E.That’s at least two cultures in space and time,with an intersection of at least two disciplines,philosophy and rhetoric.Stoicism’s impact is less a matter of the recovery of an old philosophy during the Renaissance,and more a matter of left-over residues of a philosophy that impacted rhetoric during its classical foundation.
