我国除台湾省外,现有中等以上城市236个,人口总数为14,467万多人。这些城市大都是全国和省、自治区或某个地区的政治、经济、交通和科学文化中心。城市邮政通信是直接为国家机关和工矿企业、科学文化事业等单位及广大城市居民服务的。城市邮局大都处于全国、省、自治区或地区的邮政通信枢纽地位,是全国邮政通信网的重要组成部分,对贯彻落实迅速、准确、安全、方便的邮政通信服务方针起着主导作用。
