After Japan was hit by two world energy crises in the 1970s, two obvious changes took place in the thermal power units in Japan: the rapid development of supercritical units for coal-fired and variable-pressure operation. From 1980s to the early 1990s, the large-scale thermal power units built in Japan are shown in Table 1. The total capacity of coal-fired units is 5760WW (about 40 units) in 1982 and 10200MW in 1985, accounting for 5.6% of the total power. It is estimated that in 1990 it will reach 20000MW, accounting for 11% and will increase to 17% by the end of this century.
