在新式学堂创建以前,我国的传统教育,在教学方式上主要实行公私学塾制和个别教授式。一间书屋里,十数个或数十个学童按不同程度读不同的书,各个人的读书进度也互有参差。塾师授课时,令学童站立书案前,读一句讲一句,用朱笔圈一句。讲读圈点若干句后,令学童退下,再唤另一个学童,仍然照此办理。学童听塾师讲过以后,退回原座,高声吟读背诵。因此,在教法上主要采用讲解法(从教师方面说)和记诵法(从学生方面说)。新式学堂兴办以后,个别教授的学塾制被集体教授的班级制所
