爱德华.索亚反对以往那种从单纯的时间维度来理解马克思主义的方式,并提出进行一种真正的总体性的社会批判,即不单是从历史的时间维度对社会进行批判,也需要从地理的空间维度对社会进行批判,并将马克思的历史唯物主义改造成为历史-地理唯物主义。这种历史-地理唯物主义可以视为对传统局限于单纯时间视野的历史唯物主义的一个新的发展。
