Telomeres are significant structures at the end of chromosomes, which play an essential role in various biological events, such as aging and apoptosis. In recent years, the research on telomeres and telomerase is a hot topic in life science. The human telomeric-DNA sequence consists of double stranded dTTAGGG/dCCCTAA repeats and a guanine-rich single-stranded 3’overhang that can fold into intramolecular G-guadruplex structures, which block the action of telomerase. As telomerase is activated to maintain the length of telomere in 80-85% of cancer cells and stablization of G-quadruplexes by small molecules has recently shown to inhibit the transcriptional activity of some oncogenes,G-quadruplex has become an important and promising approach for developing anticancer drugs.
