Different from the previous writings, Stand up《立》is a record of growth of Chi Li’s(池莉) daughter, and it is also the puberty rite that she gives to her daughter. Her pregnancy, her daughter’s graduation from world-class university and getting the first job, Chi Li accompanied her daughter all the time. She not only writes about her daughter from a mother’s perspective but also writes about how her daughter made her better. They two grow together with their own life styles, getting rid of the heavy burden of the exam-oriented education and gaining popular success.
Chi Li said that she wrote To Love You More《怎么爱你也不够》when her daughter, Yichi, was five years old. When Yichi was eighteen years old, she wrote Come on, My Child《来吧孩子》. After Yichen went to university, she has had thought that she wouldn’t have passion to write. But now, despite the bitterness in life, her daughter still thrives. “Now looking back, I found, I’m a silly mother having silly good fortune. I owe all this to my daughter. She is more viable beyond my imagination. For example, from the time when she determined to enter a high school in UK at age of fifteen to her fulfillment of the master degree, I never checked her homework. How easy I feel! Is there anything happier than being an easy mom? So I decided to write Stand up. What I can give to my daughter are a stack of papers with some words.”

Chi Li sighed and said, “23 years is fast, full of fantasy and joy. I once felt quite heavy. When the baby was born, suddenly I was scared staring at such a little baby. I doubted having a child was a rash action on a whim. Nowadays, the world is full of unknown with education being rigid day by day; it is a vicious arena for pushy parents. In that predicament - we poor family even had no dwelling, and I was an aged first-time mom who had to go to work after the baby was one month old, and even no people could help me look after her- how to bring up her?”
Stand up is the emotional heritage of Chili over 24 years. She spent 5 years wholeheartedly writing her experiences of growing together with her daughter. Just as Chi Li said, “to show off your child or praise your child is like tickling yourself – you feel very comfortable while others think it ungraceful. In Stand up, neither showing off nor praising, I just talk about education. The education to children is what the safety to food, it has too many problems. But as a mother, I will fight against it. That’s it!” The education in both school and society now cannot let our children stand up. Being a life-long burden to his parents, a child is also out of place all his life. How could it be that? There are too many parents spending their energy and money on their children, but what is the result? The final result is that even when children begin to work, they still rely on parents buying house and getting married. They still need parents to take care of their own children. Their work is filled with anxiety, fatigue and hidden rules, and what is worse, they have been physically down and ill and their health is in great risk.
The educational concept and method do not hinge on the economic condition and position. The examples that the offspring of the rich and the government officials were spoiled are common occurrence. Everyone can establish his or her own educational conception and method, what’s matter is whether you think it of or think it thoroughly and whether you make it.

In this book, she points out that there is no uniform starting line in life and it is an untenable logic. Life is neither an easy competition nor a uniform starting line. “I must dote on my child’s weakness, in this way to strengthen her. Let her gradually adapt to the tyranny of this society and this competitive dog-eat-dog world.” Chi Li abandoned the traditional educational pattern and sent her daughter to the world class university — London School of Economics.
As she concerned, the most effective education is a life style, which is to create a more intimate, equal and free life style with mutual respect. “Don’t let your children lose at the starting line — who said this total impudent remark without logic… The high expectation for children is out of parent’s love for children. It should be a standard and ideal established by parents to instruct their children by using their characters and behaviors on the growth process of their children. Meanwhile, children are willing to accept and slowly turn into their own subjective consciousness.”

It is because she is an independent individual and has her own living environments and own needs and ideas.” Hence, Chi Li often reminds herself to trust her child and to be a mom knowing when to let her go. “Stand up” not just directs at the graduation from university, master degree, doctor degree and postdoctor. It is when the children are reliable, thoughtful, physical and mental health and can earn their own breads that our parents will be completely relax and relieved. This is the nature of “stand up”.

Born in Wuhan, Chi Li began to publish her works at the end of the 1980s. Her trilogy of life, Annoying Life《烦恼人生》, Don’t Talk about Love《不谈爱情》, Birth of the Sun《太阳出世》, are the pioneering and classic works of new realism in Chinese novels. Over the 20 years, her works were adapted to films, TV plays, dramas and French stage plays, such as To and fro《来来往往》, Morning, Miss《小姐你早》and You Thought Who You Are《你为你是谁》. Meanwhile, the works were rendered by publishers to publish at overseas markets, like France, Britain, Spain, Japan and Germany.
Similar to other writers, Chi Li has a complicated personality. She is a little bit cruel, like if a hand is pretty, she will acutely point out, “the nails are grimed with dirt.” Sometimes you may find tiredness in her eyes as if she lost interest in life; sometimes keenness and solemnity. You will feel she is a cat when all these gathering on her.
She lives a sequestered and introspective life. In her diary she wrote, “How should we live? What do we live on? Loneliness and jollification, toil and comfort, dispraise and honor, what is the basis of them? How do they control our life? And where do the powers come from when we possess and lose, abandon and acquire? Dear friends, how can I comfort you and myself?”
Woolf said that a real good writer must “live a man’s life in woman’s body”. Chi Li called herself an innate such a writer. The action that she tears up the bleeding wound is as heartless as Natalie Portman in ‘Black Swan”, arrogant and never cherishing herself. At the end of Her City《她的城》, it is like a pottery bottle with cold air emitting from the cracks, but the inside floats bright yellow and soft brocade, shining like the light on a dark night. She said men and women are softhearted along with her writing. Until Drops to Pearls《熬至滴水成珠》talks about love, family and neighborhood, the society and understanding of writing.
Some readers complain that Chi Li’s work is wordy. Hongying, a writer, once said that the best time of a writer may not come when she is most mature. Has the time of Chi Li already gone? Regardless of the degree of concern in Chili is derived from the era of commodity economy heating up attention to flat vulgar life or because people are indifferent and excessively belittle intellectuals, and no matter Chi Li herself minds the “past” saying or not, her self-adhere is the same as her insistence on loving words. Her readers are stubborn like her, spitting at the “superficial and showy but no-content novels”. As Chi Li said, she is not the heroine in her works who is a true woman, daring to revolt and struggle. She just insists on one thing: writing, just writing not engaged in false social activities. That is why I feel at ease, tranquil and without anxiety…just let them criticize or make other comments. And because of that, her readers boldly like the writers and lives they prefer.
The “excellence” of Chi Li’s novels lies in her close attention to the society and humanity and seeing this world with indifference. As she considered more, in her novels there is “sharpness” with which she can be observant and alert to dig the depth. Neither too warm nor too cold, it leaves some “space” for you to imagine, which may be related to her principles: never be opinionated. Do not think the world needs your criticism or your admiration.
