重庆阳戏是祭祀戏剧,演出时通过对阳戏神明的膜拜来祈求福祉以驱邪纳吉。神轴画像是众多神明的集中体现,一般主要悬挂在演出坛场现场,根据其不同的描绘内容有不同的使用方法和悬挂位置。重庆阳戏多数神坛的主奉神明是川主、土主、药王,以及《总真神轴》和《三教总真神轴》中描绘的120多位神明,除此之外还有一些区域的阳戏坛班还单独供奉一些另具特色的神明形象或演出中使用一些神轴画像作为特殊道具。神轴画像是阳戏坛场布置的重要元素和阳戏演出的必备道具,为研究阳戏及其宗教艺术提供料重要素材。
