Objective: To investigate the relationship between toxoplasma (TO), rubella virus (RV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV Ⅱ) infection and congenital cleft lip and palate. Methods: Serum anti-TO-IgM, anti-RV-IgM, anti-CMV-IgM and anti-HSVII-IgM were detected by ELISA in 120 children aged 2 months to 10 years with cleft lip and palate and 62 normal children. Results: The positive rates of sick children were 4.2%, 3.3%, 33.3% and 3.3% respectively, while the normal children were 1.6%, 3.2%, 21.0% and 3.3 %, No statistically significant difference between the two. The positive rate of anti-CMV-IgM in children aged 2 ~ 3 months was 43.8%, significantly higher than that of normal children (9.1%, P <0.05). Conclusion: The occurrence of cleft lip and palate may not be related to TO, RV and HSV Ⅱ infection, and may be related to congenital CMV infection.
